Garmin eTrex GPS connect via USB to laptop HELP!!!!!!!?

I have a Garmin eTrex GPS, and i am trying to hook it up to my laptop i have the serial cable for my eTrex and purchased and male to USB adapter to plug into my laptop, only i cannot get the adapter to install. Any help is appreciated.

The only thing that will install is the adapter, as the etrex is a serial device and does not install on the computer. If the adapter is installed, it would be up to whatever software you have to communicate on the com port that was created.
